Pinterest Boards Time for Some Housekeeping?

Your business Pinterest profile is complete and youve started pinning, repinning and commenting. Youre probably seeing new followers and repins every day.

If youre like me (a free-spirited pinner), you may find yourself creating new boards on-the-fly, or as-you-pin. While this is very convenient, it can leave you with a board with no description, no keywords and no category. The horror!

True Pinterest Confessions

Housekeeping 1In preparation for this post, I did a quick review of our Pinterest boards and found more than one without a description or category. Its just so easy to get caught up in pinning and forget to go back and organize, but we must!

Why You Need Pinterest Board Descriptions and Categories

Ever browsed by category? You need to assign one before your pins and boards show up. Want to build SEO and get more traffic to your boards, pins and site? You need keywords in your board descriptions and names.

Plan for an Organized Pinterest Account

Its really best to plan out what boards you would like to have and create them all, carefully crafting names and descriptions and choosing the applicable category. If you find something that doesnt fit an existing board, consider going in to Pinterest and creating the board BEFORE you pin. Its just so easy to forget to go back later and fill out the details and fill up the board!

Pinterest Board Housekeeping

When I first started pinning, I had no idea how big this would get, so my organization was, well, nonexistent (a bit like my desk, really). I had overly broad boards (social media) and some boards with just one pin. Not good.

Do you have some abandoned boards, boards with too broad a topic, or an account that is is otherwise an unorganized mess? Its time to do some cleaning. Think carefully before you delete entire boards, as some of your followers may ONLY follow that one board of yours.

You may want to create some secret boards to house the pins that were in the overly general boards, fill them up with pins that were in other boards where they didnt belong and then release them, as its always nice to have a board with more than one pin in it, even when its under construction. You can add pins to your secret board, choose the cover you want, make sure your description, name and category are perfect and then release it! At that time, you can either delete the pins from the original board, or leave them there. Whichever you choose, you will be making progress towards a more organized account. This makes reference easier for you AND your followers.

Housekeeping 3I plan to try hard to keep things under control on our Pinterest account. But, Im guessing Ill need to revisit this on a regular basis to keep thing organized. Maybe a monthly or quarterly touch-up should go on my calendar. What about you? Do you keep your Pinterest account spic n span, or is a creative hot mess?
